Interceptive Orthodontics (Early Treatment Orthodontics)
Early orthodontic intervention, also known as interceptive orthodontics, begins when the child turns 6 or 7. It is an age in which the teeth and jaws are still at their developmental stage. Some common problems children face, such as crossbites, tongue thrust, and crowding, can be addressed effectively with the help of interceptive orthodontics. Common appliances for fixing these dental problems include space maintainers, habit appliances, and rapid palatal expanders.
Space Maintainers: It is an appliance used for maintaining space due to premature or early loss of primary teeth. Space maintainers are available in various types. Some of them, to name a few, include band and loop, nance, distal shoe, and Lingual Holding Arch.
Habit Appliances: These appliances are used for correcting problems such as tongue thrust and thumb-sucking.
Rapid Palatal Expander: Rapid Palatal Expanders (RPEs) play an important role in fixing the problem of posterior crossbite.
